Facts

Is the lead singer of the band Evanescence.

While meeting friends at a restaurant, a guy she barely knew looked into her eyes and asked, “Are you happy?” That emotional moment inspired the feeling behind “Bring Me To Life”.

Her favorite artists include Tori Amos, Nirvana, Michael Jackson, Nine Inch Nails (Trent Reznor), Björk, and Coldplay.

Says that if she hadn’t become famous, she would want to “help people in some way.”

Is the daughter of John Lee and Sara Cargill. She has siblings named Robbie and Carrie.
🔹 (She also had a younger sister, Bonnie, who tragically passed away as a child.)

She was named after the song “Amie” by Pure Prairie League.

Born in Riverside, California. Grew up moving through West Palm Beach, Florida; Illinois; Kansas; and eventually settled in Little Rock, Arkansas, where she co-founded Evanescence.

Collaborated with the band Seether on the song “Broken” for The Punisher (2004) soundtrack.

Won Best New Artist and Best Hard Rock Performance (Bring Me To Life) at the 2004 Grammy Awards.

Had a pet cat named Zero (named after the Smashing Pumpkins). 🔹

Is a classically trained pianist, having studied classical piano for 9 years as a child.

Graduated from Pulaski Academy in Little Rock, Arkansas, Class of 2000.

Briefly attended Middle Tennessee State University before fully pursuing music.

Was an alto in her school choir and served as president of the choir council her senior year.

Wrote a choral arrangement called “Listen to the Rain” that was performed by her school choir at her graduation. 🔹

While growing up, moved frequently — living in Illinois, Kansas, Florida, and finally Arkansas.

Is a spokesperson for the National Epilepsy Foundation, advocating for awareness after a family connection to epilepsy.

After her younger sister Bonnie’s tragic death, Amy wrote the song “Hello” (Track 9 on Fallen). It was so personal that she has said she cannot perform it live in concert.

Her father, John Lee, was a TV personality for local commercials and once won The Gong Show in 1980 with a performance of “Desperado.” 🔹 (He is rumored to have competed against Paul Reubens — Pee Wee Herman — but that’s not officially confirmed.)

Experienced incidents with stalkers, which inspired the Evanescence song “Snow White Queen” on The Open Door.

The title came from “Snow White” (a fan nickname for her) and “Queen” (referencing the twisted feeling of unwanted attention). 🔹

Married her longtime boyfriend, therapist Josh Hartzler, on May 6, 2007, after a four-month engagement.

Gave birth to her first child, Jack Lion Hartzler, at age 32 on July 24, 2014, at 7:51 a.m. He weighed 7 lbs 13 oz and was 21 inches long. The child’s father is her husband, Josh Hartzler.

Evanescence Premieres New Song ‘Even In Death’

Evanescence fans can breathe a sigh of relief as the band’s publicists have confirmed that they are working on new music. As part of their upcoming box set that will be releaed on February 17th, Evanescence has released its first studio recording since 2011 titled “Even In Death.”

Frontwoman Amy Lee has said in past interviews that while they are working on their new record, it will have a more unorthodox release. “There is some new Evanescence stuff that we’re starting at, but it’s not exactly the most traditional thing . . . there’s something else that’s a little bit special and different and (that is) gonna take you down a different path that we wanna try.”

Quotes

My darlings, if I can’t write dark, epic music, I can’t live! Amy Lee

I’ve always been a very passionate, sometimes overly emotional person. Sometimes things affect me more than they should. Amy Lee

I was always a drama queen. I remember playing in the kitchen, trying to get my mom to think I was dead and call the police. When she didn’t, I would cry. I was always theatrical. I don’t think any of my relatives are surprised. Amy Lee

Evanescence fans aren’t the popular kids in school. They aren’t the cheerleaders. It’s the art kids and the nerds and the kids who grow up to be the most interesting creative people. Amy Lee

I try to be feminist in, like, I love myself and I don’t need someone else’s approval. Amy Lee

Music is therapy for me. It’s my outlet for every negative thing I’ve ever been through. It lets me turn something bad into something beautiful. Amy Lee

If people are making fun of you then you’re probably doing something right. Amy Lee

We’ve all fallen, but at the same time we’re not broken. There is the hint that we are going to get up again. Amy Lee

A fan once asked if he could have a piece of my hair for voodoo. I said no, so he hugged me and plucked out a couple of hairs and ran off. Amy Lee

Success gave me confidence as an artist. And now I’m able to do what I want without anybody thinking it’s dumb.  Amy Lee

L.A. doesn’t have any big personality to me; it’s not inspiring. Amy Lee

Christina Aguilera’s ‘Stripped’ had a lot of good songs. It’s my range, so I use it to warm up a lot. Amy Lee

The first real concert, other than going with my dad to see Three Dog Night, was Smashing Pumpkins and Garbage. I was fourteen or fifteen. I liked Shirley Manson because she reminded me of Annie Lennox. They both have these deep, sexy, powerful alto voices. Amy Lee
