Evanescence returns with a powerful anthem, âFight Like a Girl,â for the upcoming John Wick spinoff film Ballerina. Coâwritten and performed by frontwoman Amy Lee alongside altârock artist K.Flay, the track was released on June 6, 2025, coinciding with the filmâs theatrical debut.
After the success of âHand That Feedsâ (Amy Leeâs collaboration with Halsey released on May 9, 2025), Evanescence continued their involvement with Ballerina by enlisting K.Flay for the endâcredit song. âFight Like a Girlâ was conceived as a thematic complement to the filmâs narrativeâone centered on vengeance, resilience, and female empowerment. In interviews, Amy Lee revealed that Tyler Bates, Ballerinaâs composer and producer, reached out with the filmâs concept, sparking the writing process.
K.Flay (Kristine Flaherty), known for her genreâbending style, recorded her verse while on tour, describing the immediate inspiration she felt upon hearing the demo. Together, Lee and Flaherty crafted a duet that balances cinematic drama with alternative rock intensity.
The song was recorded in early 2025, with K.Flay writing and recording her verse while on tour, and Amy Lee tracking her vocals for the filmâs soundtrack. Producer Tyler Bates ensured the track seamlessly transitions from the filmâs final sequence into the end credits, incorporating cinematic percussion and string swells beneath the rock foundation.
Amy Lee spoke about the timing of the collaboration:
âTyler calling me up to create this song for Ballerina couldnât have come at a more perfect time. I know Iâm not the only girl out there ready to dig my heels in and show the world what weâre made of. I really wanted this song to be a collab, and K.Flay is one of my favourite artists. It is literally a dream come true to do this together!â
K.Flay added:
âAmy sent me the demo and I was immediately so energised, so inspired. I was on tour at the time, and I wrote my verse backstage after a show, when my adrenaline was still super high. For me, the film and the song are both about how we channel our pain and how we choose to define ourselves. What separates the hero from the villain?â
The title and refrain, âBut can you fight like a girl?â, subvert traditional gender expectations. Instead of portraying fragility, the phrase becomes a rallying cry for empowerment and defiance. Throughout the verses, Lee and Flaherty trade lines about vengeance (âTonight, youâre the victim of your own crime / Youâll swallow your fateâ), solidifying the songâs position as an anthem of strength against adversariesâeven when the odds appear stacked.
With âFight Like a Girl,â Amy Lee and K.Flay deliver an uncompromising anthem that aligns perfectly with Ballerinaâs narrative of revenge and redemption. The collaboration highlights Evanescenceâs ability to adapt their signature sound to cinematic contexts, while K.Flayâs raw lyricism brings a fresh perspective. As fans digest the songâand as the film hits theatersââFight Like a Girlâ stands as a reminder that empowerment can be loud, fierce, and unapologetic. You can steam now on Spotify here!
