Throwback Thursday: Evanescence Unplugged – The 2004 Anywhere But Home Era

Before YouTube, livestreams and TikTok snippets, Evanescence had given their fans something raw, haunting, and unforgettable: the Anywhere but Home live album and DVD, released in 2004. Recorded during the Paris show at Le Zénith, the set perfectly showcased Amy Lee’s soaring vocals in a powerful live setting—untouched by studio polish but fully equipped with emotional rawness.

Fans were treated to rare acoustic renditions of My Immortal and Breathe No More, and a chilling cover of Korn’s Thoughtless. Amy’s presence, the gothic imagery, and energy from the audience turned Anywhere But Home from being just a concert documentary to a landmark of the band’s early touring years.

The DVD was a way for many first-time viewers to see Evanescence live-whether they actually did, or just through their living room TV, it cemented Amy Lee as one of the most compelling frontwomen of the 2000s.

Behind the Veil: Rare Acoustic Performances of Amy Lee

Behind the Veil: Rare Acoustic Performances of Amy Lee

Amy Lee’s acoustic performances reveal the raw emotional heart of her music by stripping away layers of orchestration and distortion. With only her voice and minimal accompaniment, every lyric feels personal and charged with vulnerability. Their intimate nature provides rare glimpses into the songwriter hiding behind a powerful front-woman: her classical training, nuanced phrasing, and soft breath dynamics that so often get lost in the full-band mix.

These versions captivate fans not only because they are different, but also because of the closeness they create: it is as if Amy is sitting across from you, one hushed note at a time telling her stories. Whether at a secret soundcheck, an exclusive radio session, or an invite to a late night studio session, her acoustic performances always remind us that at the core of every epic chorus is a simple, unforgettable melody.

Anywhere But Home Tour Soundcheck (Live in Paris, 2004)

Captured during Evanescence’s European leg of the Anywhere But Home tour, this acoustic “My Immortal” strips back the full‑band arrangement to just Amy’s vocals and piano. Notice the delicate reverb on her voice and the way she holds that final note, making each lyric linger in the air.

Evanescence’s Amy Lee Thinks Nathan Fielder Is ‘Some Kind of Genius’ — Vulture Interview

Evanescence’s Amy Lee Thinks Nathan Fielder Is ‘Some Kind of Genius’ — Vulture Interview

In the third episode of The Rehearsal’s second season, “Pilot’s Code,” Nathan Fielder’s quest to improve inter-pilot communication brings him to his most extravagant simulation yet. In a bid to understand the mind-set of a pilot who’s open to feedback, he turns to the widely celebrated story of Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, who, in 2009, successfully landed a passenger plane on the Hudson River after an engine was struck by a flock of birds. Fielder’s curiosity hinges on an interaction and an absence: In the black-box recording of Sully’s famous flight, there’s a notable 23-second stretch of silence as he navigates the descent, after which he is heard asking his co-pilot for ideas. What happened during that stretch, and what made Sullenberger the kind of captain who would solicit feedback from his first officer?

To answer these questions, Fielder turns to Sullenberger’s memoir, Highest Duty, and proceeds to subject himself to a series of simulations that draw from the captain’s life experiences, meant to help Fielder better understand the guy. He goes all the way back to infancy in a sequence that produces the indelible image of a fully-shaven Fielder in diapers going through the motions of being a baby, complete with breastfeeding by a colossal puppet standing in for Sullenberger’s mother.

“I don’t even know what word to put on it,” Amy Lee, Evanescence’s lead singer, says about the sequence. “It’s just blowing my mind. It’s really beautiful.” Speaking from her home in Nashville, Lee discussed the episode, the aviation community’s strong affinity for the band in general, and whether she’d undergo one of these rehearsals herself.

Between its blend of humor, heart, and grand theatricality, this episode exemplifies why so many viewers — and even rock stars — are captivated by Fielder’s singular vision.

Throwback Thursday: Evanescence Rise to Fame

Throwback Thursday: Evanescence Rise to Fame

Every Thursday we dive into some nostalgic moments and reminisce about the rise of Evanescence, whose trademark theme was mixing gothic rock and haunting melodies into the mainstream among the early 2000s.

It all started in Little Rock, Arkansas, where a young Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody met at a youth camp whilst they started writing music together. The humble beginnings would eventually take Evanescence to the top of the charts with their groundbreaking debut album, “Fallen,” in March 2003.

Evanescence live at the Music Farm in Charleston, SC 2003

“Fallen” isn’t just an album — it’s a cultural moment, a phenomenon. “Bring Me to Life”, “My Immortal,” and “Going Under” spoke to a generation with their emotional resonance and dark, cinematic sound. With Amy Lee’s soaring top notes, Evanescence pushed into a realm of music history through their fusion of the rock, metal, and orchestral genres.

Particularly, “Bring Me to Life” was propelled to stardom for the inclusion within the 2003 movie Daredevil. The Grammy Award for Best Hard Rock Performance was awarded for the single and “Fallen” went on to sell over 17 million units throughout the world.

Despite lineup changes, personal struggles, and long gaps between albums, the evolution has continued, staying true to their emotional intensity and musical ingenuity. From The Open Door historically representing growth in 2006 through to Synthesis in 2017 and The Bitter Truth in 2021, these albums talk about growth, resilience, and artistic bravery.

The throwback today celebrates not just an account of success in their early days but the everlasting essence of Evanescence: a band that dared to be different and change the face of rock music forever.

EVANESCENCE’s AMY LEE Opens Up About Her Mixed Feelings For “Everybody’s Fool”

EVANESCENCE’s AMY LEE Opens Up About Her Mixed Feelings For “Everybody’s Fool”

Evanescence is currently basking in the glory of two decades since the release of their breakthrough album Fallen, and as usual, with the celebration, some details about the album have come to light. In a recent exclusive interview with Kerrang!, the band’s frontwoman and leader, Amy Lee, opened up about the mixed emotions she harbors for one of the album’s tracks: “Everybody’s Fool.”

Lee admitted that the song’s lyrics reflect her youthful perspective, something she no longer fully identifies with. “It’s just the way it sounds when you read the lyrics,” she explained. “I was talking about high school and talking to, more than anything, my little sisters.”

The singer recalled her frustration with the pop culture influences that had captivated her younger siblings. “I was like, ‘Guys, that is not what’s cool, it’s not about what’s on the surface – that’s superficial, it’s about what’s in your heart,'” she shared.

Lee acknowledged that the song’s message of superficiality stemmed from her own experiences in the spotlight. “‘Everybody’s Fool’ started off from watching them and me being like, ‘Why are you idolizing something that’s fake?'” she explained. “I don’t like the way that it’s phrased.”

To reconcile her feelings, Lee decided to reinterpret the song’s meaning during the music video production. “When we did the video, I made it like it was about me,” she revealed. “I could relate to the way people see you on the big stage being very different to who you really are, and that’s not necessarily being what you wanted to be.”

Despite her reservations about the song’s original message, Lee emphasized that she doesn’t harbor any animosity towards “Everybody’s Fool.” “I don’t have any song that I’ve put out that I hate,” she affirmed. “It’s just that I’ve grown out of it a little bit.”

Vocal Evolution: Tracing Amy Lee’s Singing Style

Vocal Evolution: Tracing Amy Lee’s Singing Style

Since the debut of “Fallen” from Evanescence back in 2003, Amy Lee has been one of the leading vocalists of rock, combining classical training with raw emotional power. Drawing from her background as a classically trained pianist and singer, she infused gothic-flavored melodies with operatic control and dramatic flair. Over five studio albums, her technique, tone, and interpretive nuance have evolved with the time, personal experience, and changing aesthetics of production. Just as comfortable singing haunting ballads or punctuating with arena-sized anthems, Lee’s use of dynamics with emotion makes every performance a showcase of an artist in evolution. In this deep-dive analysis, we follow the different phases of her journey-to-him vocal journey.

1. Raw Power & Gothic Drama on Fallen (2003)

On tracks like “Bring Me to Life,” Amy’s voice crackles with urgency. She balances a tight chest-voice belt against sudden head-voice shifts, creating that signature “open-door” effect in the opening lines.
